What is Normatec compression therapy?

Normatic compression therapy is a targeted restorative massage therapy that applies dynamic pneumatic compression via expert-designed, wearable equipment available for the legs/feet, arms and hips.

Normatec is a premium, well-known product in fitness and therapeutic industries for maximising sports and muscle recovery associated with athletic activity and working out, improved mobility and treatment of injuries and conditions associated with the circulatory system.

How does Normatec compression therapy work?

Normatec’s inflatable compression garments surround the area and deliver intermittent compression – providing massage and increasing fluid movement in target areas and blood flow throughout the body.

The pulsing (pumping) action mimics natural muscle pumps using hold/release pressure and it’s patented ‘no gap’ compression technology helps prevent fluid backflow to one-way valves in the veins and lymphatic vessels in the arms and legs.

Normatec compression therapy features

  • Hand-held control unit that allows you to switch between attachments, pressure settings and set duration.
  • 7 compression levels and adjustable “zone boost” settings (for extra time and pressure where it’s needed)
  • 5 overlapping zones in the legs and 2 overlapping zones in the hips.

Benefits of Normatec compression therapy

So what are the advantages of compression therapy? The overall benefits of improved movement, circulation and muscle recovery can improve your quality of life in many areas.

Sport and fitness:

Normatec compression therapy alleviates lactic acid and lymphatic fluid build up, allowing detoxification and fresh blood flow to muscles for accelerated recovery following physical exertion or an intense workout.

  • Faster muscle recovery
  • Maintain a competitive edge
  • Reduced muscle fatigue
  • Maximise training and performance
  • Increase blood flow
  • Reduce swelling and stiffness
  • Assist healing injury
  • Less downtime between workouts
  • Maintain full range of motion

Athletes incorporate Normatec compression therapy into their routine to train and perform better at their optimum, in turn feeling the reward and satisfaction of achieving their fitness goals. It can be used to warm up before a workout, or afterwards (post work-out).

Define and slim your target areas! Normatec compression therapy may also complement weight loss strategies by assisting removal of mobilised fat to be detoxified through the liver.

Using our Normatec compression therapy

If you need assistance, I am here to help with correct operation of the equipment (so you can feel assured that you are doing things right) and quality advice specific to your needs. We can help with:

  • Fitting and removing the Normatec garments
  • Pressure settings
  • Scheduling your sessions
  • Customised routines

In fitness, Normatec compression therapy can be used to massage and warm up your muscles prior to a workout, or for recovery afterwards. It can be used by everybody – including in low-level everyday fitness and also high-level competition fitness (think triathlons!).

To feel the benefits, we recommend consistent use as follows:

  • Pre-workout session: 10-20 minutes at medium intensity
  • Post-workout session (as soon as possible after training): 20-30 minutes at high intensity

So what does Normatec compression therapy feel like? When you switch on the garments you fill feel them pre-inflate (this is when they mould to your body shape). The compression then begins at the lowest point (i.e. your feet or your hands) and works its way up your limb in a ‘pulse and release’ cycle.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use Normatec compression therapy?

Use Normatec as soon as possible after training (within a few hours), as it helps clear the lactic acid and metabolites out of your muscles. 30 minutes is preferred by most for a post-workout session, however some like up to 60 minutes (this is personal preference and either is safe).

What should I wear?

Light clothing. A short sleeve shirt and shorts or leggings are best.  Jeans or bulky clothes are not recommended.

Can I break up my recovery session?

We are happy to break up the 1-hour compression session if scheduling allows (for example 2 x 30-minute bursts). Let us know what you have in mind and we can help you design your perfect session.

Here is a combination we recommend:

  • 30 minutes Normatec compression therapy – hips
  • 1 hour massage
  • 30 minutes Normatec compression therapy – legs

When shouldn’t I use Normatec compression therapy?

Normatec compression therapy is safe and complications are rare, however you should avoid using it if you have:

  • A skin condition causing irritable or fragile skin
  • Open wounds/sores
  • Limb size or shape that prevents the garments fitting correctly
  • Poor or lack of sensation in your limbs

If you have a significant health condition or you are on prescription medication, you should always consult your medical practitioner.
